FYI, chilblains is a condition in which the tiny blood vessels in your skin become inflamed due to sudden presence of warmth after a prolonged exposure to cold temperature. Parts of the body such as nose, fingers, toes and ears are prone to chilblains and can be easily inflamed. Common symptoms include redness, blisters, swelling, stiffness, itchiness and sometimes ulceration. For some it occurs occasionally, while for the rest, every winter becomes to worry for. Fortunately, there are some homemade chilblain treatments that work amazingly and are worth giving a try. Before learning the remedies, allow us to first explain to you the factors that trigger this deadly condition.

1. Keep warm

This is the utmost method to treat your chilblains. Make sure you always have your gloves, scarf and boots on when you leave the house. You should also wear thick socks to protect your skin from extreme coldness. Avoid warming up your body right after coming back, especially near the fireplace. This will trigger chilblains.

2. Exercise

It is an alternative way to raise your body’s temperature and blood circulation. In most cases, chilblains are caused by poor blood circulation. Hence it is recommended that you do a lot of cardiovascular exercises to increase the blood flow and keep your body warm.

3. Potato rub

This remedy reduces the redness and itchiness of skin. Slice a potato and sprinkle some salt on it. Rub the sliced potato onto the affected skin. Salt relieves itchiness and potato reduces the redness.

4. Black peppercorns and sesame oil

This is one of the most popular chilblain treatments. To prepare this remedy, fry some black peppercorns in sesame oil. Filter this oil, and use it to massage your inflamed skin. However, make sure not to use it if your skin is bruised or cracked as it can lead to advanced inflammation.

5. Glycerin with wheat flour

Glycerin acts as a shield to protect the skin against the cold temperature. And when used with wheat flour, it traps the heat in your body and keeps your body warm. Get one egg white, one tablespoon of honey, and one tablespoon of glycerin. Mix these ingredients with the wheat flour and apply over chilblain and leave it overnight. You may wash off with warm water the next morning.

6. Raw onions

Onions don’t just make you cry, they keep you healthy too. The juice from onion relieves itchiness instantly and cures chilblain when applied consistently. Cut a raw onion and rub the edges all over the inflamed skin. Let the juice soak for 5 minutes before rinsing off with warm water.

7. Warm vegetable oil

Warm some vegetable oil in the pan and use it to massage on your skin. You may add a few drops of lemon juice to it. This is said to improve blood circulation and stops itchiness.

8. Lemon rub

Halve a lemon and rub it on your chilblain. Let the lemon juice soak for some time and later wash off with cold water. This cures your chilblain very quickly. You may use it with some garlic too.

9. Turnips

Turnips are really great to soothe the itchiness and bruises caused by chilblains. Mash some freshly boiled turnip and mix with some glycerin. Apply this paste on your chilblain. You may also soak your feet or hands in the water you boiled the turnip earlier.

10. Ginger + mint soak

This is an effective foot soak for chilblains. Not only it is anti-inflammatory, it also boosts your blood circulation. Boil about 6 thin slices of ginger and some mint leaves in 5 cups of water. While it is still hot, pour the water into a basin, and add some cool water until the soak becomes warm. Soak your feet in it for 20 minutes.

11. Quit bad habits

As much as smoking and alcohol can worsen your health overall, it is also bad for people who have a history of chilblains. These habits are associated with poor blood circulation, which can make your chilblain worse. Hence, quit smoking and drinking.

12. Readjust your diet

If poor nutrition is what that caused your chilblain, you might want to reconsider your current diet plan. You should consume foods that are higher in calcium, vitamin K, vitamin E and fatty acids. Leafy vegetables such as spinach and nuts and grains such as almond, oats, sesame seeds and millets are fairly beneficial.
