Osteoporosis Treatments

Osteoporosis Treatments – Osteoporosis is the most common type of bone disease. It is a disease in which bones become fragile and more likely to fracture. Usually the bone loses density, which measures the amount of calcium and minerals in the bone. Bone is living tissue. Existing bone is constantly being replaced by new bone. It occurs when the body fails to form enough new bone, when too much existing bone is reabsorbed by the body, or both.

Calcium is one of the important minerals needed for bones to form. If you do not get enough calcium and vitamin D, or your body does not absorb enough calcium from your diet, your bones may become brittle and more likely to fracture.

Sometimes bone loss occurs without any cause. Caucasian women are more likely to have bone loss. Sometimes the tendency to have bone loss and thin bones is passed down through families. Because of osteoporosis about half of all women over the age of 50 will have a fracture of the hip, wrist, or vertebra (bone of the spine) during their lifetime. But worry not, it is a treatable disease. All you got to do is take care of your bones, and feed them a good amount of calcium every day. But be sure not to overfeed it. It can lead to other complications. There are many osteoporosis treatments available these days. We will explain them to you.

Osteoporosis Treatments – What About The Causes?

Condition of the bone before and after developing osteoporosis

Before we explain to you the treatments available, let us discuss with you osteoporosis symptoms and also its causes. It is a disease caused principally by the significant loss of bone mineral density (BMD). Early in life, more bone is laid down than is removed, and an individual’s peak bone mass is typically achieved by around age 30. After peak bone mass is reached, the remodeling process (the replacement process of bones) takes away more bone than is replaced. Hence making the bones more prone to osteoporosis (and consequently to fracture). Here are six causes of ost’sis (the most common) :

  • Low calcium intake
  • Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa
  • Excessive consumption of alcohol
  • Family history,
  • Hormonal conditions (too much or too little hormones, such as sex hormones and thyroid hormones)
  • Steroids and medications (medications used to treat seizures, depression and cancer)

Osteoporosis Symptoms

Now, moving on the the symptoms of the same. There are rarely symptoms in the early stages of this disease. Often times, people will experience a fracture before learning that they have developed this disease. Pain almost anywhere in the spine can be caused by fractures of the bones of the spine. These are called compression fractures. The main clinical ost’sis symptoms of vertebral fractures typically include one or a combination of the following symptoms:

  • Sudden onset of back pain
  • Standing or walking will usually make the pain worse
  • Lying on one’s back makes the pain less intense
  • Limited spinal mobility
  • Height loss
  • Deformity and disability
  • Fatigue

The treatments should be used with proper ost’is diet. Ost’sis diet means eating foods that are high in calcium, magnesium, potassium and Vitamin D. Doctors will normally give you an osteoporosis diet food list, to help guide you on what type of foods you should and should not take.
Along with this diet will be conducted a treatment, or perhaps a combination of two or more treatments. Here is a list of treatments:

This disease is best treated with medications. Of course, there are many therapies available. But they are said not to be as effective as the medications. But you must bear in mind that they can trigger some side effects such as nausea, abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing and esophageal ulcers. Few of the medicines used for treatment are :
– Alendronate (Fosamax, Binosto)
– Risedronate (Actonel, Atelvia)
– Ibandronate (Boniva)
– Zoledronic acid (Reclast, Zometa)
